A memorandum of requests by informal traders who claim police abuse was read out at the mayor's office in Johannesburg on Wednesday afternoon.

Assistant director of petitions for the municipality, Peter Kute signed the memorandum saying: "We are inviting the executive to the offices tomorrow to discuss their requests."

The memorandum, with a list of 29 requests, was read out by One Voice For All Hawkers Association president Zacharia Ramutulwana in front of a 300-strong crowd of informal traders and two representatives of the Johannesburg municipality.

Evicted shack dwellers from the Gabon informal settlement on the East Rand have refused to occupy the 72 corrugated iron shacks built for them by the Ekurhuleni Municipality. This after they were evicted and their shacks demolished on May 11.

Zoleka Ton's three-year-old daughter, Azile, was inconsolable on June 28 as she watched their shack in Kliptown being torn down by metro police officers.

n's shack was among eight that were demolished after the Department of Housing's implementation and monitoring unit accused the shack dwellers of illegally occupying council land in Freedom Charter Square informal settlement.

Evicted shack dwellers from Gauteng and Ekurhuleni -- accused of illegally occupying council land -- are now seeking legal recourse after their shacks were demolished recently. Their legal reprentatives believe they stand a good chance of winning the case because an eviction without a court order is unlawful.

Tensions are running high in Cape Town over the city's apparent relocation of poor and homeless people to Blikkiesdorp on the Cape Flats -- an attempt, critics charge, to hide grim reality from visiting World Cup fans.

Blikkiesdorp was built by city authorities in Delft on the Cape Flats in 2008 and has since mushroomed. Its hundreds of corrugated-iron structures house about 3 000 people.

Street traders at the Grand Parade in Cape Town have been told to leave the area from May 1 until the end of the Soccer World Cup because of Fifa by-laws that relate to host cities.

"According to the host-city agreement, the city is legally obligated to provide a stadium and a fan-fest area," said Thembinkosi Siganda, Cape Town's director of economic and human development.
