CAPE TOWN - The Newfields Village Anti-Eviction Campaign is planning more protest action against the Cape Town Community Housing Company.

The residents from Newfields Village and nine other villages of "low cost housing" built by the Cape Town Community Housing Company already campaigned for years to force the government to allocate R46 million to repair the defects in their houses. These included crumbling walls, leaks, cracks and others. Their campaign included a massive and long running rent boycott.

Press Alert

9pm

DELFT, CAPE TOWN - A major clash looks likely to take place tomorrow (Monday 24th December 2007) from early in the morning in Delft, Cape Town.

Today, Lindiwe Sisulu, Minister of Housing, gave the instruction to Thubelisha Homes and the SA Police to decisively remove all 1000 people who have occupied the 500 newly built BNG houses in Delft.

Shortly after she gave this instruction, four truckloads of soldiers stationed themselves at Delft police station.

We must point out that this looming eviction will be completely illegal. There is absolutely no eviction order from the court that would authorise the government to evict these residents.

Joe Slovo eviction application dismissed

An urgent application to stop the relocation of 20 000 Joe Slovo informal settlement residents to Delft, on the Cape Flats, was dismissed by the Cape High Court on Thursday morning.

Western Cape Judge President John Hlophe said he would give reasons for the decision at a later stage.

The legal teams for both parties have now launched an application for consent to evict residents of the Joe Slovo settlement, which is next to the N2 highway.

The state-owned developer Thubelisha Homes wants to construct formal housing there as part of the Western Cape's N2 gateway project.

Anti-Eviction Campaign vows to intensify boycott and campaign against FNB, the bank of forced removals

|

Press Release
11 October 2007
11am

The Western Cape Anti-Eviction Campaign vowed yesterday to intensify its campaign against First National Bank (FNB) because of the bank's partnership with privatised housing company, Thubelisha Homes.

The Gugulethu Backyard Dwellers Forum announced that it would join the campaign against FNB.

The Anti-Eviction Campaign rejects FNB's claim that it is not involved in trying to forcibly remove the residents of Joe Slovo. FNB has apparently "bought" the land currently housing Joe Slovo residents for R5 million and are working in partnership with Thubelisha Homes to make huge profits once the current residents are forcibly removed.
